This rice cooker is just what I need. No more pans to clean and the rice is much fluffier.

I recommend this product.

 "3 of 4 ain't bad! ;) Design issues though" 2009-05-04
By John (OH USA)
I've had this about 6 months. I do these things on the stovetop usually (rice, steaming, pasta) as I consider these to be simple... and I don't have a problem doing it and cleanup is about the same. I don't use a dishwasher as I don't have a family with me anymore, so a dishwasher is pretty wasteful for me.

This little device can be helpful though:

*Microwave usually takes about half the time as it heats faster

*If you're the forgetful type or are distracted, the microwave turns off and you don't have to worry about most "unwatched" issues

*it can free up stovetops for other tasks

It has its problems too though:

*microwaves vary widely both in power and in efficiency of delivering the heat to the food. This means almost everything done in it takes "trial and error" adjustment of liquid ratios and recipe timings.

For this little gadget, I'd rate FUNCTIONALITY as follows:

-Steaming foods: 5 STAR-- works fine. many other units do the same though as steaming is easy and non-critical ..

-Popcorn: 3 STAR-- this is pretty bad.. it can be made to work and that's about it. This is fussy and % pop is lower. The Nordic Ware Microwaver Popcorn Popper 12 Cup (available as part of sets and individually) works rather better.

-Rice: 4 STAR-- This works as well as other microwave rice makers..I don't find it to be any better and its more expensive.

-Pasta: 4 STAR-- This is pretty much the same as rice..

DESIGN issues are POOR.

*This unit is quite unstable, having only 3 legs and they aren't even at the edge.. Any "jiggle" of this with something in it will tip it over.

*Plastic used for the bowl/leg unit is definitely breakable. If you drop it for any reason, its likely broken. The "locking lid" is likewise pretty prone to damage.

*The plastic, though fairly tolerant of heat will definitly melt and soften/warp if overheated.. usually due to inadequate water or just letting it run without checking it.

Overall 2 STAR for design including safety, usability, durability, and convenience... This is a serious issue to me and will affect every user.

The unit isn't bad, and certainly can be a useful addition to the kitchen, but for me it's OK at best. I find that the Nordicware is better in almost every safety category and at least equal in performance. (it isn't perfect either, just better)

All of the units I looked at take up a lot of room and are "fussy" in that there are bits and pieces that have to be stored and kept track of in various ways. They are NOT compactly stored :( At least they aren't electric so they are light and have no "power" issues such as plug access and cleaning issues.. hehe.

I'd love to rate this higher as it is a useful tool, but I feel that its negatives are high and there are equal or better alternatives.

"Well cooked rice for a change" 2009-02-14
By E. Gilbreth (Oklahoma)
No more sticky rice. I've tried to cook flacky rice for years and always ended up with something resembling mashed potatoes. Instructions almost always said,"boil in a saucepan with a tight fitting lid until all the water has boiled away". Just how is one supposed to know the water is gone without opening the pan and stirring the rice?

The microwave cooker works just as it is advertised. I couldn't be more satisfied.

 "The best pooper" 2009-07-08
By K. M. Carroll (Pittsburgh,Pa.)
I just bought my second power popper. I had the first one for at least twelve years before something melted onto it making it unusable. If not for that, I'd have had it lot longer.

I like it because you can make air popped corn, that is without oil. It's less greasy and less fattening that way. But you can use oil if that's what you want. I like this better than other types of air poppers, also, because it's not as messy.

 "The Perfect Popper" 2009-06-21
By P. R. Bermon
I have tried several plug in air poppers without much success, so was thrilled to finally discover this outstanding (and reasonably priced) little alternative. It takes a bit of practice to get the timing right, but once you get that down you can say good-bye to that nasty burned smell/taste and wasted kernels. Like one of the other reviewers, I had better luck turning the power down a touch, and add the butter spray and salt after popping to prolong the life of the concentrator over several batches.

"Best popcorn I've had in years." 2009-02-19
By B. Allen (southern CA)
This thing works great. It pops the corn well, leaving very few old maids, and the popcorn tastes like that which I remember from my childhood that my mom or my sister and later I, having learned at the feet of those masters, would make on the stovetop. Well, perhaps learned but rarely perfected. I burned a lot of pans over the years. That's why I started using the microwave stuff. It was easy and there were no burnt pots or pans to clean up or sometimes to just throw away...

So you get used to the taste of microwave popcorn and you forget just how great real popcorn used to be. But I had been reading the labels on the stuff and was not happy about the idea that I was consuming all of those processing agents that are used in microwave popcorn. Then I came across this item on Amazon and thought that it might be a good alternative.

Once you have used this to make your popcorn you won't be able to eat regular microwave popcorn ever again. The difference is dramatic. After using this for a week or two, we ran out of corn to pop in it and decided that we should use up the microwave corn that we still had. We had to throw it out because it now tasted like plastic processed crap. I went to the store that night to get some real popping corn. We gave away an entire case of the other stuff and will never use it again.

Just remember to stock up on the "power cups" because it won't work properly without them and don't submerge the black popping stand in water. Remember those two things and it will be a great experience, plus you will no longer be ingesting all of those chemicals and preservatives that are used in regular microwave popcorn.

"Great Popcorn Popper, Works As Advertised" 2009-07-21
By Andrew Blythe (Pennsylvania, USA)
I wanted to try out popping popcorn differently than buying the microwave bags of popcorn. I bought one of the air poppers that have the chute at the front, but that was a bust, as the kernels would bounce off the bowl onto the floor. Going back to the store that had the air popper I orignally bought, I found the Presto Microwave Popper. I've seen commericals for these many years ago, and didn't know they were still being made. Long story short, this popper works great, with most of the kernels popping (very good popped to unpopped ratio). The popper comes with these heating discs that go on the bottom of the popper before adding corn and oil. One disc will last between 12-24 batches of popcorn, depending on whether you use oil or not. The replacement discs I've found at Wal-Mart as well as the store that I bought the popper from. Very easy to clean, the base separates from the bowl, with the bowl and lid being dishwasher safe. Great product, 4 stars!!!

"No so good for making plain popcorn" 2009-05-23
By Alex B (San Antonio, TX USA)
I am comparing the PowerPop to an old hot air popper. It made very good plain popcorn. I prefer popcorn made without oil and only lightly salted. I thought the PowerPop would be ideal because of so many good reviews on how great the popcorn tasted.

The problem is with the concentrator which you replace after several uses. The kernels are placed in the bottom of the bowel on top of the paper plate like concentrators. The concentrator will scorch at full or partial power. That browned scorch, which is normal even after one use, causes an odor in unoiled kernels that I can detect when I lift the lid when the popping is finished. I can taste that mild but noticeable burnt flavor in the popcorn. That burnt smell and taste may not be apparent unless you have been accustomed to plain, hot air popped corn.

When I followed the instructions and used oil as recommended by the PowerPop instructions, the scorched smell and taste are not as obvious. I also used the same bag of kernels for both the old hot air popper and the PowerPop to compare the taste. I do not recommend the PowerPop for making plain, unoiled popcorn.

 "Kind of a let-down from Presto" 2009-05-17
By JK (Dairyland)
I really like my other Presto products, a pressure cooker and the Pizzazz pizza cooker. But this thing is more of a gimmick than anything else. It does work pretty well, but is kind of a hassle to clean and store. Plus I need to remember to keep the little paper cooking disks in stock. I liked it OK at first, but now rarely use it. Microwave popcorn bags don't really cost that much more than the bulk popcorn plus the disks, and are much more convenient.

 "A great popcorn burner" 2009-05-02
By Philip Odom (Vancouver, WA United States)
I've now made about half a dozen batches of popcorn in the PowerPop I got last week. I haven't found any way to use it that doesn't result in burnt corn. Even using low power levels and shorter times or removing it and shaking the popped corn every 30 seconds still results in some burning. The inserts get much too hot, much too quickly, and I noticed that there is some charred plastic in the bottom of the bowl.

Used "normally" (e.g. 2 minutes on high), as I did for the first batch, my PowerPop produces a blackened, smoky mess.
